ADVANCED TELEVISION: BIG Media licenses Leviathan to EarthX for Earth Day premiere

Global production and distribution company BIG Media has licensed its original documentary Leviathan: Whale and Man (1 x 90’) to US-based conservation and sustainability-focused channel EarthX. The film, which explores whales and their evolving relationship with humanity and the world’s oceans, will have its North American debut on Earth Day, April 22, at 9 pm ET across EarthX’s cable and FAST channels.

Leviathan, directed by Steve Lichtag, combines marine science, historical perspective, and cinematic storytelling as it investigates phenomena such as rare whale sightings, mass strandings, and surprising predator-prey interactions—including great white sharks increasingly hunted by orcas—while questioning how modern conservation priorities may be impacting the balance of marine life.

Tracing humanity’s long fascination with whales—from ancient mythology and industrial-scale whaling to today’s conservation movements—the film raises complex questions about how environmental policy, cultural differences, public sentiment, and scientific understanding intersect in the protection of marine ecosystems.

Leviathan arrives at a moment when the health of our oceans and the role of large marine species within fragile ecosystems are being widely examined and debated,” said Danny Wilk, president and co-founder of BIG Media. “This documentary combines rigorous scientific inquiry with striking cinematography to explore the evolving relationship between humans and whales within the broader marine environment. EarthX has built a strong reputation for presenting thoughtful, high-quality environmental programming, making it the ideal home for a film that raises timely and important questions about conservation, science, and the future of our oceans.”

EarthX is available on cable and satellite platforms such as DIRECTV, Philo, Spectrum, and AT&T U-verse.  Viewers can also access its streaming channel EarthXtra via Amazon Prime, Fire TV, Plex, Xumo, Sling, and Vizio.  The channels focus on environmental storytelling and sustainability issues, delivering programming that explores the natural world, climate solutions, conservation, and the intersection of humanity and the planet.

“We are pleased to add Leviathan to our lineup of entertaining factual programming which celebrates the beauty and awesome wonder of our planet,” said Ross Mason, Vice President of Content for EarthX Media. “As a powerful documentary on whale conservation and the complex relationship humanity has with our oceans, we are thrilled for its premiere during our Earth Week celebrations as The Official Network of Earth Day.”
